Sabotage

Book cover titled "Sabotage" from "The League of Maritime Adventurers" series, showing boats in a chase on water.

Terry had chosen to stand upright behind a native oak tree, its trunk screened from the path by a decorative bush. He slowly took a deep breath, then let it out, relaxing his shoulders as he did so. Around him he could hear the others settling down, a bird hunting insects on the ground a few yards away, and slow droning of a bee above his head. There was a strong smell coming from the flowers, brought to him by the soft breeze blowing across his face. Under his hands, he could feel the rough bark of the tree, and the slight tickle of a tiny insect against his skin. With that done, he concentrated only on his hearing, his other senses alert but secondary. He heard footsteps approaching, four pairs of shoes thumping on the dry mud trail worn through the short grass. They were moving quite fast, so this was no relaxed walk around the island. The hum of human voices grew louder, the words not yet discernable. As the seconds slipped by, the sounds became words, although not yet a full conversation. A man was speaking, the same voice they’d heard when following the ship.
